Tuning & Dehumidifying Key to Piano Care Singapore

In Singapore, relying solely on regular tuning is not enough to maintain a piano‘s optimal condition. Humidity control and tuning are two complementary maintenance measures—neither can be neglected.
The ideal environment for a piano is a temperature of approximately 20–25°C and relative humidity of 40–60%. However, Singapore’s humidity typically ranges from 75% to 85% year-round, and even higher during the rainy season. In such conditions, even a freshly tuned piano may drop noticeably in pitch within one to two weeks if humidity fluctuates dramatically.
Effective humidity control solutions include:
Internal Dehumidifying Rod: Installed inside the piano’s lower chassis and runs 24/7, creating a localized low-humidity environment inside the instrument. Check periodically that the rod is warm to the touch—this indicates it is working properly.
Room Dehumidifier: If the piano is in an enclosed room, use a dehumidifier to maintain ambient humidity between 50% and 70%. Note that dehumidifiers expel warm air; ventilation may be needed during hot weather.
Proper Placement: Keep the piano away from windows, exterior walls, air-conditioning vents, kitchens, and bathrooms. Place it against an interior wall, leaving at least 15 cm of space for air circulation.
Avoid Intermittent AC: Humidity fluctuations from repeatedly turning air-conditioning on and off are more damaging than constant high humidity. If using AC, maintain steady operation or pair it with dehumidification equipment to minimize swings.
Schedule tuning at least twice a year, and ask the tuner to check internal humidity conditions and part wear during each visit. Regular maintenance not only preserves beautiful tone but also extends the piano‘s lifespan and protects its resale value.
