Broken Piano String? Repair Guide for Singapore

Broken piano strings are less common than sticky keys, but when they occur, the affected note becomes completely silent, severely impacting playability. In Singapore, there are three main causes of broken strings: rust and corrosion, forcing pitch up sharply after long periods without tuning, and metal fatigue from prolonged heavy playing.

High humidity is the main culprit behind string rust. Corrosion weakens string strength, making it prone to breakage during tuning or forceful playing. Bass strings on grand pianos, which have copper winding, are especially vulnerable to breaking at the junction between the winding and the core wire.

When a piano has not been tuned for more than two years, overall string tension is significantly low. If a tuner performs a standard tuning directly, raising pitch to 440 Hz in one pass, the thin steel wires in the treble section can easily snap. The correct approach is to perform a pitch raise, increasing tension in stages with several days or even a week between sessions.

The procedure for replacing a broken string is as follows: first remove the old broken string and clean any residue from the tuning pin. Then select a new string of the same gauge, thread one end into the tuning pin hole and wrap it three or four times for security, and hook the other end onto the hitch pin. Bass strings must use original or custom-wound strings, as plain steel wire cannot substitute. After installation, perform an initial pull to tension, wait about a week for the new string to stretch and stabilize, then conduct a fine tuning.

In Singapore, replacing a single plain steel string typically costs between S40andS80. Wound bass strings, which require custom ordering, range from S80toS150. To prevent string breakage, maintain a dry environment, schedule regular tunings, and have a technician check string corrosion annually.
