Choosing an Upright Piano for a Smaller Home

Published: 9/20/2026 5:11:13 AM   Clicked: 3

Many households in Singapore live in apartments or HDB flats where living room or bedroom space is limited, so when choosing an upright piano, size and placement often become the deciding factor before tone even enters the picture.

Uprights are broadly grouped into three heights: under 110cm, a compact size suited to very tight spaces, though the shorter soundboard means somewhat thinner bass response; around 120 to 125cm, the standard size most households end up choosing, balancing tone and space needs; and 130cm and above, a professional size with fuller tone but needing more generous wall height and room depth.

Beyond the piano's own footprint, it's worth leaving enough “breathing room” around it — at least 10 to 15cm of clearance behind the piano from the wall, so heat and moisture can dissipate properly, and enough space in front of the bench for arm movement while playing and for getting up comfortably. Before buying, it helps to mark out the piano and bench's actual footprint on the floor with tape and see how it feels in the room — a much more direct way to judge fit than reading a spec sheet alone.
