Grand pianos are broadly grouped into five size categories based on their length, from the front of the keyboard to the tail — and each size differs noticeably in tone, space requirements, and price. Understanding these categories first makes it much easier to narrow down a choice.

A petite grand runs roughly 140 to 150cm and is the most compact grand available, suited to homes with limited space that still want the shape and touch of a grand, though bass response is somewhat restrained. A baby grand runs roughly 150 to 170cm and is the most common choice among home buyers, offering a reasonable balance between tone and space needed.

A parlor grand runs roughly 170 to 190cm, with fuller tone, suited to a larger living room or dedicated music room. A semi-concert grand runs roughly 190 to 220cm and is generally used in small to mid-sized performance venues. A full concert grand typically runs 220cm or more, with volume and resonance built for large concert halls — a size most households have little reason to consider.
