Beyond the internal mechanical parts, cabinet refinishing is often a major part of restoring an older piano, especially one with chipped finish, scratches, or peeling veneer. The different refinishing options vary quite a bit in price and outcome, and it's worth understanding them before deciding.

Veneer refinishing involves applying a new layer of real wood veneer over the existing cabinet, preserving a natural wood-grain look. It suits owners who want that natural finish on a limited budget, though it has limited effect on a cabinet that's already badly warped. Spray lacquer refinishing sands down the existing finish and applies a new matte or semi-gloss coat — a relatively simple process, suited to cabinets that are structurally sound but just have a tired-looking finish.

A high-gloss polyester (piano lacquer) finish is currently the most striking option, giving a thick, glossy surface close to the look of a brand-new piano — but the process is involved, requiring multiple layers of spraying, sanding, and polishing, so it costs the most and usually takes two to three weeks. Beyond budget, the choice should also factor in the cabinet's original material and structural condition, which is best assessed by a technician in person before deciding.
